A Less Destructive Divorce

We focus on helping our clients work out a divorce settlement that everyone can live with. For most couples, this can lead to a better outcome long term.

Orlando Family Law Attorney Carmelina Marin

In my family law practice, I advise clients on divorce and a wide variety of issues. Most of my time is spent helping people resolve issues resulting from divorce or the dissolution of a marriage or domestic partnership, but I help families in a whole range of family law problems.

I represent men and women, married or divorcing couples, and unmarried parents, helping them with child custody and visitation arrangements, child support, spousal support ("alimony"), and the division of marital assets and debt. I represent fathers or mothers in paternity cases and help them gain a clear understanding of their parental obligations and rights. I also represent people who need to seek modification of an existing child custody, visitation, or support order.

My name is Carmelina Marin. At The Marin Law Firm, P.A., in Orlando, I work closely with families throughout central Florida, who are going through a divorce or are involved in any one of a number of family law disputes. Contact me for a confidential consultation.

Florida Divorce and Dissolution of Marriage

In my experience, most divorcing couples benefit from ending their marriage through a negotiated settlement rather than taking their divorce cases to trial. In the vast majority of the divorces I handle, I strive to help the parties resolve their issues with a marital settlement agreement.

If a marital termination agreement is possible, we will work together to fashion an agreement that meets your needs and protects your rights. If a marriage settlement is not in your best interest, I am willing and able to take any issue to court.

Marital settlement agreements are not right for everyone. If there are issues of domestic violence, if the safety of a party or a child is in question, or if one party is unwilling to negotiate in good faith, I do not recommend attempting a negotiated divorce.

If the United States Is Not Your Country of Origin

If you came to Florida from another country and are considering divorce or another legal issue involving your family, you need to understand your rights and responsibilities under American law.

Florida's laws governing child custody, child support, alimony and property rights may be very different from those in your country of origin. Even more important, American customs may be different from your own, which could mean you are unaware of many things you may be entitled to or of actions you are required to take.

I can help you understand what to expect in Florida family court. I speak Spanish fluently and can obtain other translation services for you. If you have questions or concerns about your obligations or rights under Florida law, please contact me to discuss your situation.

Protection from Domestic Violence in Florida

I work extensively with victims of domestic violence, both spousal abuse and child abuse. I help people who are experiencing family violence to understand their rights and responsibilities under Florida law and work aggressively to protect their rights and the safety of their children. I have successfully obtained injunctions for protection (also known as restraining orders or protective orders) for clients throughout central Florida.

I am committed to handling cases involving the application of the Violence Against Women Act ("VAWA"). VAWA protects victims of abuse, particularly immigrants who are being subjected to physical abuse by a spouse upon whom they depend for their immigrant status. Your husband or wife is not allowed to threaten to have you deported if you do not put up with violence. The U.S. government passed VAWA to allow you to leave an abusive spouse and keep your immigration status.

At the same time, emotional family situations sometimes end up with false accusations. If someone has unfairly applied for an injunction for protection against you, I am committed to defending you against it.
